The ideal weather during summer is the perfect opportunity for families to trek to the beach in the hopes of beating the summer heat. At the same time, summer is the best time to tinker around the house and fix what needs to be fixed before the cooler weather starts or rains start pouring. So what do you need to do to ensure your home is ready for the changes in the season? Here are some home maintenance tips you can follow:
During summer, the cool air from an air conditioning unit is sometimes not enough to eliminate the warmth inside the house. If your home is fitted with ceiling fans, it’s best that you switch the edges of the blades higher to allow you to feel the breeze when you turn it on. You may also want to purchase some tower fans that will help circulate the air below for a much cooler home. However, you may want to read up on tips when shopping for the best tower fan first so you can find the right one that will fit your needs. Using fans to drive warm air out of your home will reduce the need to use the A/C unit, thereby allowing you to save on electric consumption at the same time.
If you use a dryer at home, make sure to clean the dryer vent since it is most likely clogged with lint, dust, and other particles. You can easily purchase a cleaning brush kit for this purpose. A brush that’s the right size can remove 100% of lint and other particles in the lint trap. Just make sure both sides of the dryer vent are cleaned and free of lint. The last thing you want is for a house fire to start due to your dryer vent that’s clogged with particles.
Don’t forget to check the gutters around your house and remove piles of debris that may have accumulated there. Otherwise, once heavy rains fall, the gutters could get flooded, resulting to leaks in the house. Use a small scoop to remove wet leaves or dirt that has caked from the gutter canal. Then, make running water run down the gutter to give it a thorough cleansing and to see whether there are leaks or holes. Flush down water through the downspouts, too, to see whether or not those are clogged. If you think you will not be able to clean the gutters again in a while, cover them with a wire mesh to keep leaves and other debris out.
Is your house in dire need of repainting? If so, then summer is the perfect time to buckle down to work. If repainting is out of the question, use a power washer instead and some commercial grade detergent to clean all forms of dirt staining your house. You’ll see later on, once the sun shines bright on your house, that its real color will emerge, thereby making the house look sparklingly good.
Summertime is the best time to enjoy a slew of outdoor activities. Nevertheless, it’s also the best time to get your house fall and winter ready. No time is the best time as summer to do some home maintenance. Do it at the start of the summer so you’ll have enough time to enjoy the rest of the summer outdoors with the whole family.
